After the rain we have had, the grass is really starting to grow; at this point we are keeping on top of it and the definition on the course is really starting to stand out. The greens are continuing to improve and the areas that were seeded are filling in well. Over the last week further seeding has taken place in some of the areas that were worst affected.

Richard Allen gets his first Hole in One
Congratulations to Richard Allen who had his first hole in one last Saturday. His rescue wood on the 14th was expertly struck, pitched onto the green, rolled up to the pin and dropped in the hole. Richard off 23 handicap has been playing golf for over 20 years and at Shrewsbury Golf Club for the last 5 years. He admits that he wasn't playing a particularly good round up to the 14th. "I was very chuffed, it was very sweet," he said proudly. Richard was playing in a friendly with Ken Anderson, John Burrows and Steve Dawson. Commenting on the shot Steve said: "It looked good all the way. There was a nice shape to the shot and then it disappeared into the hole." We all shouted "It's in, Its in!!"
Shrewsbury welcome Market Drayton in Handicap League
The Shrewsbury Handicap league team welcomed Market Drayton to Shrewsbury Golf Club in the third of their handicap league matches in the first round of the national tournament. Captained by Phil Millar, who played in the first of the six games to decide the match, the team played good golf but were overpowered by the excellent play from the Market Drayton team. Despite finding the greens fast and slick in comparison to their course they triumphed convincingly. Shrewsbury's Dave Griffiths and Ian Bunker were the first to succumb to great play by market Drayton's Ash Carr and Dave Saxon. Andy Mallett and Chris Griffiths beat Ian Corcoran and Dave Garrett to bring the games to one a-piece before Market Drayton began asserting their supremacy. Dave Kidby and John Pike lost on the 16th to Ian Hand and Mike Faulkner as did Tom Kerr and Graham Palmer who were beaten by Den Hampton and Paul Whitehurst. Simon Lander and John Prescot won their game against Rob Ball and Mike McCabe to seal a convincing victory of 5 games to one. Both teams convened in the club house to enjoy an excellent chilli followed by banoffee pie. Shrewsbury's next handicap league match is this Saturday at Market Drayton.
Get ready for course news
A great deal of work has been happening on the course over the last few months to get it into tip top condition. Jeff Moody, chair of the Greens Committee is producing a quarterly newsletter that will be available to view on the website and on the notice board in the club. It will provide members with an insight into developments on the course, from improvements to bunkers to the exciting undulations appearing behind the first green. The newsletter wil be out in the next few days, so keep an eye out for it.
Seniors Section plays Oswestry
Last Tuesday the Seniors section enjoyed a friendly against Oswestry, one of their longstanding fixtures they look forward to. Sixteen players from each side played in a four ball better ball match. Duncan Lowes was welcomed to the team, playing his first match for the seniors. While the company was warm and welcoming the weather in contrast proved to be wet and windy. Despite this both teams enjoyed good play with Ed Garbett from Oswestry and Keith Lane from Shrewsbury demonstrating their love of par 3 holes each scoring a two. They were rewarded with golf balls in the club house after both teams tucked into delicious steak pie. The contest was close resulting in a win for Shrewsbury by the slightest of margins, 4.5 to 3.5. A return match at Oswestry in June is already being greatly anticipated. The seniors next friendly will be at Hawkstone Park.
