No luck with the weather...
Unfortunately, due to the continued rain and the forecast over the next few days, this weekends shotgun start has been postponed. The course is under review daily and the golf club course information line is being updated regularly.
The Pro shop remains open and we are trying to hand collect range balls so that members can continue to use the practice facilities when the sun occasional appears. Thank you to some brave soles who turned up to the seniors coaching in the sleet this week, next week we are covering pitching and surely we must be due for some better weather.
This week we have seen some new products been presented from our Titleist rep. Some very exciting new products which will be arriving mid-march including the new Vokey SM8 wedges which now for the first time feature their new Tungsten weighting which through testing from tour players they claim helps to rotate and square the clubface at impact. They also feature hand-cut grooves, 6 grind/bounce options and come in 3 different finishes.
We have seen the new range of Scotty Cameron Select Newport and Phantom X putters which look excellent. Huge range of new and classic head shapes. The Phantom X is a range of new high tech modern mallet putters engineered to take performance to the next level.

Old putter new ball?
With so much talk on the golf ball having an effect on the distance players are able to hit driver and iron shots. Have you ever thought of the effect of the golf ball and the putter?
When the pro v1 didn’t exist golf balls were smaller and softer meaning the compression of the ball was greater. In simple terms, if we were to hit an old golf ball vs a new golf ball; the old golf ball (pre pro v1) would compress more meaning it would be in contact with the club for longer, compared to the new ball would be in contact with the club for less time.

How has this effected putting? You may have a putter which is 50 years old but are playing a golf ball which has been designed around the modern era of golf clubs. The way putters have been designed and build in the last decade have facilitated the change in golf ball.
Through research from Dr. Paul Hurrian (expert putting coach), the putt is now dictated 92-95% (new ball) by the face angle – used to be roughly 80% (old ball). We so often look at the strokes path as opposed to looking where the putter face is at impact. I would strongly recommend testing a putter model post 2010 and see how you get on. I have more info on this topic for any members who would like to know more, visit the shop.
Old golf ball (pre pro v1) – Softer (greater compression) New golf ball (post pro v1) – Firmer (less compression)

Last week we revealed a remarkable statistic regarding the number of golfers playing grips that are over a year old, but what impact does that actually have on your game? Well, we decided to do some digging... |
| Tension whilst gripping | Grips are made from rubber and are prone to wear and tear, just like the tyres on your car. When they become worn, your grips will lose tackiness and your hands will start to slip during the swing, resulting in poorer shots.
The thing is, you’ll likely overcompensate by holding on to your clubs too tight, creating more tension and stiffness during the swing.
|
| Limited time offer in-store now | We know it sounds all doom and gloom, but it does make a huge difference to your game. That's why we're running this promotion at Shrewsbury Golf Club, so you can experience the benefits of a new grip first hand.
There’s no catch, just pop by the shop before your next round to take advantage. |
