Club news

Important notices

The Men's Shrewsbury Handicap League Team have reached the knockout stages of this competition. They play at Lilleshall this Saturday 13th July and are in need of some players. Any member who is interested in representing the team this Saturday then could you please contact Adrian Price on 07934662549 ASAP.

Mixed Match Cancelled

Next Sunday's Mixed Friendly against Oswestry has been cancelled due to Oswestry not being able to field a team.

Competition results

Jubilee Salver - Tuesday, 30 June

First place - Russell Jones and Monica Scott = 41pts (18).

Second place - Kevin Taylor-Lee and Helen Davies = 41pts (10).

Third place - Michael and Mary Saull = 38pts (19).

Club Championship

This year's Club Championships were a fantastic event. The new format of a two tee start worked well with everyone finishing at similar times and therefore providing a great atmosphere in the clubhouse after the event. Well done to Colin Thaw and David Sharpe who provided a great BBQ with the proceeds going to charity.

The golf course was in great condition and this presented the opportunity for our better players to post some good scores. A special mention for Tom Hancock who shot the best morning gross score of 69. This is Tom's personal best score in a competition and gave him the lead going into the afternoon.

Unfortunately Tom dropped a few shots in the afternoon and the more experienced players came through in the afternoon. Barry Ruddick had the lead through 27 holes, but Nick Evans and Tom Kerr finished strongly with Tom Kerr chipping in for a two on the 17th to tie with Nick Evans going down the 36th hole.

With both players making par, The Championship was decided by the way of a four hole play-off. With both players making par on the 1st and 9th hole. Nick took an advantage on the 10th after Tom missed the fairway with his tee shot, and Nick made birdie to close the door.

Congratulations to Nick Evans on winning his first Club Championship after finishing runner-up on a couple of occasions in recent years, it was great for Nick to get his hands on the trophy.

Congratulations also to Gordon Taylor who played in our 36 hole Club Championshi on Sunday. Gordon who is 84 years old walked around the 36 holes without the use of a buggy and shot a gross score of 83! Beating his age by one. Hopefully this will inspire more of you to enter next year's 36 hole Championships.

Overall Gross

First place - Nick Evans (73 & 69 = 142).
Second place - Thomas Kerr (72 & 70 = 142).
Third place - Barry Ruddick (71 & 72 = 143).

Overall Nett

First place - Dean Suter (64 & 70 = 134).
Second place - Ryan Davies (70 & 66 = 136).
Third place - Mark Laidler (67 & 69 = 136).

There were 19 twos across the day, worth £5.15 each.

Ladies Club Championship

In the Ladies Club Championships we have a new star player. Isla McDonald who is 12 years old has recently joined Shrewsbury Golf Club and managed to win the event by four strokes shooting two very steady scores. This is phenomenal achievement by someone so young and has already been noticed by England Golf. We will be watching with interest on Isla’s progress in the golfing world.

Overall Gross

First place - Isla McDonald-O’Brien (81 & 78 = 159).
Second place - Karen Thaw (83 & 80 = 163).
Third place - Helen Davies (82 & 87 = 169).

Overall Nett

First place - Marie O’Sullivan (69 & 75 = 144).
Second place - Karen Thaw (75 & 72 = 147).
Third place - Helen Davies (72 & 77 = 149).

Monday Mixed Social Golf - Monday 8th July

The weather stayed fine once more for the MMSG and 20 people arrived to play a Texas Scramble in groups of four. Annie Home-Dodd was in charge of the desk and brought a guest along to play, too! The results were:

First place with 24.2 nett; Monica Scott, Tina Robinson, David Czarnetzki and Ray Sant.

Second place, with 25.3 nett were Barry Russell, Mike McCabe, Annie Home-Dodd and her guest, Barbara Lorrinser.

The next MMSG is at 5:00pm on Monday, 15 July. Please sign in by 4:30pm for the draw at 4:45pm (Entry fee - £1).

First place - Alwena Edwards (101-27=74).
Second place - Anita Oliver (105-30=75).
Third place - Sue Westwood (105-29=76).
Fourth place - Tina Robinson (112-35=77).

Ladies 9 Hole Stableford - Wednesday, 10 July

First place - Eliana Withers – 21 points (19).
Second place - Ruth Grafton – 19 points (15).
Third place - Celia Russell – 17 points (13).

Hands up...

...if the only time you 'practice' your wedge play is when you hit a few shots at the start of your warm-up routine? Sadly, this isn't going to lead to a dialled in wedge game, which is one of the fastest ways to see your scores come tumbling down.

Sounds easy, right? Well, it could be but first there are two things you must do in order to start saving shots.

1. Correctly gapped wedge system - What we mean by this is having an equal gap between each club in your bag, so you're never left trying to 'manufacture' a shot on the golf course (this is where large numbers start).
