Hello Golfers,

Last weekend the snow returned and unfortunately there was no golf, luckily we had a big thaw on Monday and fingers crossed we have seen the end of the winter weather. I would like to thank all the ladies who helped organise Wednesday’s fashion show. The Day raised over £500 for charity and was enjoyed by over 100 ladies. Thank you to Pat who has written a great report on the day below.

Lady Captains Charity 9 Hole Open and Fashion Show (by Pat Alexander)

Lots of snow at the weekend accompanied by panicked phone conversations and emails on Monday – and by Tuesday the snow had disappeared! What a relief, and many thanks to the Greens Staff who had worked so hard to make the course playable - compliments from our ladies were many!

And the sun even started to shine early on Wednesday morning for the Lady Captains Charity 9 Hole Open and Fashion Show. This year, 92 ladies from fourteen different clubs took to the course for two shotgun 9 hole 4 ball stableford competitions – both front and back 9’s were played. More ladies arrived for lunch and the fashion show, and we all sat down to a light lunch ably provided by David and his team. A big thanks to the kitchen staff and the bar staff for making it run so well. We were then entertained by John and Anne Richards Fashion Show, showing the 2018 golf fashions that will be available through the Pro Shop. A raffle was supported very well with some excellent prizes funded by the clothing company reps.

Then tea and coffee was served with homemade cakes baked by many of our ladies – ladies were asked to make a contribution to the Lady Captain’s charity for a piece of cake. You were all so generous with your baking and your donations to the Lady Captains charity Severn Hospice. Thank you all so very much for such a fantastic team effort, and especially to Marion Adams, Gill Ferguson, Jayne Breeze and Pat Alexander for organising the event. Thanks also go to Ade Price for the photography.

Dave Nicholls has been a member at SGC for 7 Years, and on Thursday he made his first hole in one on the 6th hole!

His playing partners said it was a fantastic shot and deserved to go in.

It’s starting to heat up nicely

Well isn’t this starting to become rather interesting all of a sudden? With the mini Beast from the East rearing its ugly head over the weekend and ruining many people’s chance to take to the course, we found ourselves glued to the TV with one thing in mind: Tiger time.

It wouldn’t be right to talk about the weekend’s golf without prior mention to the legendary Arnold Palmer. This was the second playing of his event at Bay Hill since his passing and it was no surprise to see such a stellar field competing on The King’s home course; someone who was a trailblazer of the game for an entire generation.

But it was one of golf’s current superstars - Rory McIlroy - who stole the limelight with a superb 8-under-par on Sunday. Shooting 64 is impressive under all conditions, but it was how Rory effortlessly found another gear down the final stretch on Sunday afternoon, firing five birdies in his last six holes, to ease his way to a three-shot victory.

A quick glance at the final leaderboard and you’ll find four major winners in the top five. With Augusta just a few weeks away and so many of golf's elite finding top form, it is gearing up to be one of the most entertaining Masters in recent years.

An honest look

If you’ve been in the pro shop recently you’ll have seen lots of new products displayed proudly around the store, many of which are new for 2018.
