Men’s result

Congratulations to Johnathan Harris for winning the men’s nett competition with scores of 68, 70. Barry Ruddick was this year’s Club Champion with scores of 73, 73 following a very tense playoff with Nick Evans who shot 70,76. Nick fired a very impressive round of level par in the morning, but mistakes in the afternoon round enabled Barry to take it to a 4 hole playoff. Both men played some very impressive golf coming down the stretch. Barry was ‘Seve’ like with three superb up and down bunker shots on 14, 16 and 17, the latter bunker shot being the most impressive as it nestled inches from the cup resulting in a very stress free par meaning both men were tied going down the 36th hole of a very long and hot day.

With both players shaving the hole on the last, extra holes were needed to decide the winner of the 2017 Club Championships. A very nervy first hole resulted in a bogey for Barry and a double bogey for Nick giving Barry a one shot lead that he didn’t relinquish. After 3 more pars from both players on 9, 10 and 18 the 2017 Club Championships had its winner, Barry Ruddick.

A big thank you Colin Thaw and his sidekick Dave Sharpe for giving up their time to feed everybody after the golf was finished on Sunday, it was greatly appreciated by all the members!

Match update

On Tuesday the senior men's section braved the rainy conditions to record a 7 to 2 win against Vale of Llangollen seniors. So far this season 45 different senior members have played in the matches and at the half way stage we have won 7, halved 2 and lost 2. If you haven't played in a seniors match before and are aged 55 or over I'd recommend it particularly for new senior members. It's great a way to meet other seniors and play some excellent courses in the area and all for around £12 which includes a 2 course meal. The availability sheet for the August matches versus Ludlow at Shrewsbury on Tuesday 1st August, South Staffs at home on Tuesday 8th August, Llanymynech at home on Tuesday 15th August, Llanymynech at Llanymynech on Tuesday 22nd August and Arscott away on Thursday 31st August is on the Seniors Noticeboard.

Wenlock Olympian Games

Shrewsbury Golf Club was well represented at the Wenlock Olympian Games Society golf competition at Bridgnorth on Monday.

Tina Robinson, Hilary Fabian and Shirley Byass (Shrewsbury) and Maggie Holmes (Market Drayton) were joint third in the all-lady team of 4 section, receiving a bronze medal and

Monica Scott, Sandra Haw, Chris Edwards (Shrewsbury) and Paul Owen (Arscott) came second in the mixed team of 4 section, receiving a silver medal.

Monday 10th July

This week 19 people, including new member, Steve Hattersley, played greensomes. The clouds threatened but it stayed fine, if a little chilly. The results were close, however, there were two pairs who were ahead of the pack. Allan McVittie & Kate George with 24 points and David Czarnetzki & Shirley Byass with 23 points. In third place on count back were Hilary Fabian & Barry Russell with 21 points.

Next week we will be playing greensomes. Please arrive by 4.30pm for a 4.45pm draw.
