A long time coming
At the 74th attempt Sergio Garcia is finally a major champion. Prior to last week's Masters tournament at Augusta National, the Spaniard was widely referred to as one of the best golfers to never have won a major title - but not anymore.
Friends, Ryder Cup teammates and long-term golfing rivals Garcia and Rose shared the overnight lead going into the final round and produced a thrilling battle in their quests for a maiden Green Jacket. After 72 holes there was nothing to separate the two Europeans, and so a sudden-death playoff followed. A wayward drive into the trees by Rose at the first playoff hole paved the way for Garcia to win his first major crown.
Not many people can argue with the outcome; Sergio was the only golfer to card four under-par rounds around one of golf's toughest tests. A fitting champion.

Vale of Llangollen Match
The seniors team achieved a great result at Vale of Llangollen Golf Club last week. Despite the greens being much slower than ours the team won 7.5 to 2.5. This is always a popular fixture and we fielded 20 players including four new members -Mike Lloyd-Court (who carried me all the way), Huw Wills, Dave Evans and Elwyn Beedles. It was a very enjoyable day, the weather was kind to us, the company was excellent and the food was very good.
In our second match of the season the seniors had a convincing win against Ludlow Seniors at Ludlow. Five matches were won and two were halved. Result 6:1 to Shrewsbury.
Well done to Dave Fisher who played with me and had four birdies (Won 6&5), Kevin Brennan & Dave Cloak (Won 1 hole), John Cartwright and Mike Lloyd-Court (Won 3&2) Hugh Wills & Keith Lane (Won 3&2) Gordon Taylor & Dave Evans (Halved), Barry Russell & David Evans (Halved) and Chris Edwards & Brian Reid (Won 3&2).
Our next match is against Mile End (Away) on Thursday 20th April.
Seniors Coaching
This week we covered putting, emphasis being developing good practice habits. We looked at improving skills to help holing out from 4 feet and lagging long putts next the hole. Dave Evans was the best putter I have seen this year from short range. Dave has a pop putting method and he never missed one short putt even when we reduced the size of the hole. I am tempted to try this method myself after seeing Dave's success but you need nerves of steel on fast greens.
The final seniors' coaching session is on Wednesday 3rd May covering pitching.
