Tour news

He's back...or is he...

Despite all the excitement Tiger Woods will now not be returning to the PGA tour at the Safeway Open in California this weekend.

Tiger released a statement which read, "My health is good and I feel strong, but my game is vulnerable and not where it needs to be".

The 14 time major champion is now planning a return in early December. He remains only 3 PGA tour victories behind Sam Snead's record of 82. So what do you think? Will Tiger return to his former glory and be as dominant as he once was? Or has the game moved on in the hands of young guns like Rory, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed?

Click here to let us know whether you think Tiger will ever return to winning ways on tour.

Captain and Professional

Two close matches

The Captain and I have played 2 matches this week to help raise money for the Captain's charity. Both were incredibly tough games that went down the 18th.

Peter Donoway and Mike McCabe played some great golf. Peter played very steady hitting lots of fairways and greens, but Mike really played fantastically well from tee to green and with a shot per hole it put us under a lot of pressure. Unfortunately for Mike his putts kept slipping by the hole whilst the Capatin was on top form and managed to hole a couple of 20 footers on the back 9 to give us the edge. A 4 nett 3 on the last from the Captain secured a 1 hole victory. The match was played in a very friendly but competitive spirit and it all made for a very enjoyable round of golf.

Conrad Jones and Helen Davies were our challenges on Saturday morning. Both received 14 shots and made a gentle start. The Captain and I made 4 birdies in the first 7 holes to take the lead but then Conrad's golfing psychology took hold. Helen got fired up and started making nett birdies on 8 &11 followed by gross birdies on 13 and 15. I struggled to stay in the game as Conrad made nett birdies on 9, 14 & 18 and he continued to motivate Helen into playing some fantastic golf. The Captain had his hands full as our early lead slid away to a barrage of birdies but he held his nerve responding with some of the best golf of the year to thankfully secure a half.

It was a fantastic match with some great golf and it was a relief to end up with a half. Congratulations to our opposition on their performance and to the Captain who saved the day with some great golf.

The Prior Cup

The 96th playing of the Prior Cup between Shrewsbury Golf Club and Shrewsbury School took place on Sunday 9th October in good weather and playing conditions. Shrewsbury School have held the cup for the past two years, but in a very closely contested match the Shrewsbury Golf Club team won by four matches to two.

Prior CupThe fourball betterball match was played in a friendly though competitive spirit which took most pairs to the 17th or 18th hole with some going down to the very last putt.

The players then enjoyed a delicious dinner in the dining room provided by our catering staff followed by the presentation of the Prior Cup to the golf club team.

This event is very highly regarded by the club and the school having been played for longer than even the Ryder Cup. We look forward to next year and the centenary event in 2020 when we will hopefully enjoy a great celebration.
