England Golf Men's County Championships
Last Saturday Shrewsbury Golf Club hosted the prestigious England Golf Men's County Championships and the scoring was fantastic. We had 3 rounds of 64, with Sam Broadhurst setting the new course record of 64. The Warwickshire Men's team (pictured) won the event with a combined score of +5, narrowly edging out Lincolnshire. Sam Broadhurst (pictured) took the individual honours with scores of 64, 66 for a 10 under par total. Shropshire and Herefordshire finished the day in 8th place.
Thank you to everyone who came down and supported the players and to all the members who helped out with making the day run smoothly. A special mention for the Green staff who worked extremely hard to prepare the course, leaving it in such magnificent condition. Their hard work wasn't unnoticed, with many players commenting on how great the course was setup, especially the putting surface of the greens.
Congratulations to our 2 home players, Tom Kerr and Sean Mccarthy, who represented the county in the above event. Both players made poor starts but managed to hold their nerve, recording 75 and 77 respectively in the morning. Both players shot a very solid level par score of 70 in the afternoon. Tom Kerr's combined total of 145 was the leading S & H score on the day.
Monday Night Social (David Kidby)
The last two weeks we have seen beautiful weather gracing the Monday night social event. As summer takes hold it's good to see more people turning out to play in this fun evening event. Two weeks ago Judith Carroll and Dave Kidby took top spot with 20 points, with Ruth Grafton and David Czarnetzki in second, and Marie Sherratt and Bob Hill taking third.
Last week Cleve Middleton and Roger Withinshall emerged victorious in top spot, just one point ahead of Annie Home-Dodd and Chris George with 21 and 20 points respectively. Pam Morgan and Roy Humphries took third place with 16 points. It was lovely to welcome new members Kate and Chris George to the Monday night socials.
Shrewsbury Handicap League Team Placed To Take Second Spot (David Kidby)
Last Saturday's match against Oswestry has paved the way for our handicap league team, sponsored by Maesbrook Care Home, to take second spot in the opening round of the league.
The match at home saw great play from Gareth Jones and Stu Owen who capitalised on a substantial front nine lead against Dave Kidby and John Rigby, reaching the turn at four up. Improved play from John and Dave was not enough to hold off a convincing win by the Oswestry team with a 5 & 4 result.
Oswestry's Darryl Hopton and Chris Johnson continued the trend beating Mark Schofield and Ian Moseley. Jake Wootton and Mike Saul returned the compliment beating Tom Davis and Graham Weetman 4 & 2, while Brian Reid and Chris Jones concluded their game on the sixteenth with a 3 and 2 victory to bring the match to even.
A Stirling performance by Team Captain Phil Millar and Ian Bunker secured a 5 and 4 victory over Oswestry's Keith Osgood and Paul Huxley to put Shrewsbury in the driving seat. This was consolidated by Colin Thaw and Alan Campbell's win with another 5 & 4 result beating Simon Pound and Jez Mellors.
The final match at Oswestry on Saturday will determine where Shrewsbury is placed in the first round of the League.

Shrewsbury Junior Team
The Shrewsbury Golf Club Junior Handicap League team have recently played three matches. Though losing away at Llanymynech, they put up a great display of golf. Subsequently they have recorded two great wins at home against Arscott and Oswestry. They are looking forward to the return matches. They have benefitted from coaching sessions by our professional, John Richards, who has helped them develop their skills. The Junior Handicap League team is organised by Sarah Jones and ably led by Junior Captain Larissa Jones.

Mile End Get Revenge
The gents seniors section hosted Mile End on Tuesday, 21 June. Mile End were keen to 'get even' after Shrewsbury beat them on 'their home turf' last month! Mile End got their wish, beating Shrewsbury 5.5-2.5. The course was in fantastic condition, and was appreciated by all the players. The 'highlight' of the day was a 3 on the par 5 third by Andy Deacon ( Shrewsbury )! Thank you to all the players who turned out, here's hoping our luck will change soon!
The Travelling Circus
'On the road again' the gents seniors ' Travelling Circus' were performing at Oxley Park on Thursday 23rd June. The weather was kind, the course lovely, and the hospitality was 'second to none' as was the final result! An honourable draw, 4-4. Thank you to all the Shrewsbury team who travelled 'over the border'. The captain breaths a ' giant sigh of relief '!

Mixed Match Shrewsbury Vs Bridgnorth
We had a lovely day out, even though we had some rain. Everyone enjoyed themselves and Shrewsbury were the victors 5 1/2 to 4 1/2, with a couple from Bridgnorth competing for Shrewsbury, the final match going to the last putt on the 18th green. It was a shame that we struggled to get a team (more men required for these mixed friendly matches!)
Please contact the Lady Captain or Bill Robinson if you would like to represent the club in future mixed golf matches. Thank you to all who played representing Shrewsbury Golf Club.
Sheila Band,
Lady Captain
