2016 Golf Club Diaries

Please collect your golf club diary from the lounge.

Thank you to Dave Kidby for the following

Your Club Needs You!

In our 125th Year Shrewsbury Golf Club is aiming to do well in this Year's Handicap league. Over the last seven years our success record has not been good. Taking on well prepared competitive teams from other clubs we have not made it through the first zone matches against other clubs. This year Team Captain Phil Millar is keen to field a team that will make it beyond the quarter finals. In previous years players have been selected from a list and come together at the last moment to play.

This year we are adopting the scouting approaching and intend to be prepared. We want you to come forward if you are interested in playing and being on the team to represent your club. This year we will be playing against Lilleshall and Oswestry in the first zone matches. We play both home and away, so you need to be available to play on 17th April, 12th June,19th June and 25th June. The team will be made up of 12 players each playing with a partner. Each playing pair is made up of a player of 12 handicap or below and one of 13 to 24, so we are looking for players of all abilities.

While in previous years the team has little experience of playing as a team before the event, this year those interested will get to enjoy some training and playing sessions prior to the big event. Phil Millar would like to invite you to the first of these sessions on Saturday 27th February from 10:00 until 12:00. During these sessions there will be opportunities to play with prospective fellow team members, try different pairings, learn about matchplay strategy and even get some handy tips from the professional. If you have a regular playing partner and want to encourage them along too that would be great.

We would love you to come along, so please give either Phil Millar or Dave Kidby a call by the 26th February if you would like to help us do well in the handicap league this year. We are even talking to interested companies about sponsoring the team. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on the 29th February.

Valentines Victory for Sue and Les

Valentines Day saw 20 teams take to the course to enjoy a Valentines mixed Greensomes competition. A draw for partners made for many interesting partner combinations and an opportunity for people to play golf with someone new. Jean Evans sportingly marked her opponent's card when her partner was taken ill at the last moment. While everyone had a great day, several pairings played great golf together please see scores in the results section.

Fancy a Quiz?

What's the square root of 64? Can you tell the difference between a Buffalo and a Bison? Which Womble was named after a boot? If you can answer any of these questions then you need to get down to Shrewsbury Golf Club for the Spring Quiz on Saturday 12th March at 7.30pm. Quiz Master Mike James will be on hand to test your general knowledge under the influence of a little alcohol and a fun atmosphere. For only five pounds including buffet you could find yourself in a team of four quizzing for glory. If you're really competitive, team up before hand and enter your team, complete with silly name. Everyone is welcome whether you know who the fifth Beatle was or not. Get signing up on the sheet in the Clubhouse from next week.

Thank you to David Kidby for the above articles.

Assistants news

Congratulations to Tom Kerr who shot his lowest competitive round last weekend.

Tom shot a gross 4 under par (more on this below)! With Josh's departure I have employed Tom on a part time basis and he will be helping in the pro shop. Tom will remain an amateur for this season and will decide in September if he wishes to develop his career through the PGA.

Tom has been working very hard over the last couple of years, practicing in the most extreme weather conditions in order to hone his skills to a very high standard.

I am sure you would all like to wish Tom well as he continues to improve his game. I would like to think that Tom could get down to a scratch handicap within the next few months.
