As I write this newsletter the sun is shining and it is a beautiful winter's day. We have had extremely wet weather so far this year but we are hoping that we may enjoy a few days of dry weather and we can soon get out playing again. Unfortunately tomorrow's competition has been cancelled.
Thanks to Dave Kidby for supplying the following reports
Captain's Welcome Party
Captain, Keith Smith and Lady Captain, Sheila Band welcomed club members at their first official event after their drive in.
The evening commenced with a drinks reception followed by the introduction of committee members on both the general committee and ladies committee. Much merriment was accompanied by a delicious buffet before being treated to music from talent musicians playing banjos and everyone's favourite Hawaiian instrument, made famous by George Formby, the Ukelele.
Hits from the past included songs from Jungle book and rock band, The Kinks. Monica Scott and Celia Russell featured as part of the line-up treating everyone to some energetic strumming. Flowers were presented to the Lady Captain and our new President Anne Jarvis marking the conclusion to a very enjoyable evening.
Valentines Competition
What better way to start Valentines than playing around with someone before taking your loved one out to dinner? On Sunday the 14th February, Shrewsbury Golf Club invites you to get into the swing of things for the year in a mixed draw competition. You know who you're arriving with and who you're going home with, but in the meantime anything could happen. This fun event is a great opportunity for gentlemen to meet the Lady of their golfing dreams and potentially win a prize. You may also find yourself playing from some interesting positions courtesy of your Lady partner, called the fairway, which is an experience not to be missed and enjoyed by those who are regulars at the Monday night mixed socials. The sheet to sign up to this great event is in the foyer of the club. Go on get your name down and start Valentines with a round of golf to remember.
Thank you to Dan Perry - Head Green Keeper for the following...
The course is still sodden under foot after the torrential rain over the last few days. As a result of this tomorrows competition had been cancelled. There will be course inspection at 10am in the morning with the course information line being updated by 10.30.
We have been working in tricky conditions with the water table so high it has been extremely wet and muddy for our machines to get out on the golf course.
On a brighter note we have been working hard clearing around the pond to the right of the practice ground and planting a new hedge to screen the green keepers yard this will help to keep the area safe. Even if the course does not open there are many reasons to still come up to the golf club this weekend.
Here are just a few
*There some amazing deals in the Pro Shop (details below). *The practice area is open. Great time to get your practice in before the start of the season. Lessons are also available. *The bar and restaurant are open for business. Therefore you can meet your fellow golfers for a social drink and a game of snooker. * You may like to use any credit you have in the pro shop or balance your account before the end of month.

Josh Charnock
Many thanks to Josh for his 5 years service to the pro shop.
As many of you are aware Josh is currently caddying for James Busby which will take him all over the world, starting this month in South Africa. Josh is going to keep us up dated with life on tour which we will publish in our newsletter.
Thank you to the members who contributed towards a leaving present for him. With the money raised from the collection we purchased him a suit case which we presented to him at Christmas and you will be pleased to hear is now being used in South Africa.
